ADDITIONAL INFO:
The fishing started out slow during the beginning of this report but has picked up dramatically. The eclipse hurt the fishing for a few days but that has past. The Wild Eye Swim Shads are still the Big Bass bait of the report. We are still working them slowly on the bottom. Some of the fish are hitting it on the fall, so one must be very attentive. Anglers are also working the swimbait like a “jerk and pause”. Letting the bait hit the bottom and then jerking it, reeling up the slack (while it falls) and letting it sit for a second. Most of the time the bass will hit it on the fall. Some of the bass have been suspended so crankbaits and Rattle traps have been doing fairly well especially when the fish are feeding on Shad & Tilapia. Some anglers are catching numbers of bass on the banks due to the colder weather on white Flukes, Senkos and pop r’s. The big Rapala Shad Rap has been producing big bass but no numbers. If you keep this in mind – the bigger the bait the bigger the fish but less numbers. It all depends what one is looking for. Most of the fishing is being done right here in front of the lodge in the underwater city of old El Salto. Many big fish has been caught there including a 9, 10 & 11 pounder caught by Gerard Lomas. Zell Rowland was doing well on the new bait called the “Zellamander” which is a 6” lizard. It is a twin tail lizard and the best color was watermelon with blue flake for Zell. The best spots for the big bass have been on flats, drop offs and humps in the middle of the lake. Ty Hatch, from Hacienda Harley Davidson, landed an 11-1/2 pounder on a swimbait. Salto is still producing the monster bass that it always produced, of course like any lake in the world; it has its slow days but also has its great days. The lake is starting to drop slightly due to irrigation. This and the cold weather is why the topwater fishing has turned on. Zara Spooks have always been a big fish bait here. Be sure to bring down the suggested baits to ensure you have a better trip.
